Improving Students’ Reading Comprehension On Descriptive Text By Using Guided Reading For The Tenth Grade At SMK NU Bululawang
Reading should become the main emphasis in English teaching program in Indonesia, particularly for Vocational High School students, so many problems found in teaching reading process. Therefore, teacher should find out the solution to solve the problems. Based on the students’ problems, the researcher needs to implement Guided Reading technique to improve the students’ reading comprehension on descriptive text by using guided reading for the tenth grade at SMK NU BULULAWANG.
The researcher used Classroom Action Research (CAR) for this research. CAR was kinds of research design to know the real of students’ condition in classroom so that the researcher could improve the students learning. CAR consisted of preliminary study, planning, observing, action, reflection, and data analysis. This research for tenth grade of Accounting Competence Skill at SMK NU Bululawang. There were 34 students consisted of 31 girl students and 3 boy students. The data in this research were collected by using three kinds of data collection such as interview, questionnaire, reading test, and documentation. The research was conducted in two cycles. There were three steps in teaching and learning process such as pre-activity, whilst-activity, and post-activity.
This research showed that the students’ reading comprehension after being given using this technique, the students were achieved the criteria of success. It can be proofed from the finding that in second cycle the students who achieve criteria of success were 94% of the whole. The highest score was 90, the lowest score was 65, and the mean score was 82.94. It meant that it had reached the criteria of success was above 75% of students got >70 of score. Then, from the result of questionnaire that from 59% most students interested in English lesson, 56% most students had not difficulties in English lesson, 59% most students interested in learning technique used, 65% most students could easy to comprehend the reading text by using guided reading technique, 44% most students never knew about the technique used, 62% most students could easy to answer the questions relate to the reading text by using guided reading technique, 50% most students had not difficulties in meaning the reading text by using guided reading technique, 65% most students were active discussion in English lesson by using guided reading technique, 50 % most students felt guided reading technique help them in English lesson, and 76% students’ score increased after applying guided reading technique in English lesson. Based on the result, Guided Reading Technique gave change for the students to improve their reading comprehension in teaching and learning process. In addition, for next researcher are suggested to use Guided Reading Technique for different skill, grades and type to see the technique whether it can be implemented effectively on solving the students’ problem in comprehending the reading
