The Effectiveness Of Mind Mapping In Teaching Writing Descriptive At The Tenth Grade Of SMK PGRI Lawang
Writing skill is one of language basic skills which students should master. Yet, many students fail in their learning to master writing skill because of they have no interest to write. This condition is contrast with the school-curriculum. Thus, the researcher applied a technique in teaching English especially for writing skill. The technique used in this study was mind mapping. In this study, the researcher focused on describing person. The reason of using mind mapping in this study was caused by this technique was effective way to get the students interest in teaching writing which will give the effect for the students to improve their writing ability. Mind mapping helped the students to develop their idea in descriptive writing. This study tried to investigate whether there was a significant difference of the students’ achievement in writing descriptive before and after taught by using mind mapping. The research design of this study was pre-experimental design. The researcher chose pre-experimental design caused she wanted to know the effectiveness of mind mapping in teaching writing descriptive at the tenth grade students of SMK PGRI Lawang. It was applied in one group which was conducted in one class only.
The treatment was divided into three parts namely pre-test, treatment, and posttest. The result of pre-test was used to know the students ability in descriptive writing before giving the treatment by using mind mapping. In other hand, the result of pre-test also used to see the quality of the test in terms of its validity, reliability, and the level of difficulty. The researcher gave the same pre-test, treatment, and the post-test to the students caused there was one group as this study used preexperimental design. The total of the students were 25 students. All of students as the sample of this study would be taught by using mind mapping. The researcher gave the post-test after the treatment was done. After conducting pre and post test, the researcher analyzed the result of pre and post test score by using SPSS version 16. In order to know whether or not there was significant difference after and before treatment was given. After commutate by using SPSS the researcher concluded that the tvalue was -7.296 with the significant study was 0.000, for while the significant study less than 0.05 it could be concluded that the null hypothesis was rejected. It means that there was significant improvement of the students’ achievement in writing descriptive by using mind mapping. In other words, the research hypothesis of this study was accepted. In consequence, the English teachers are suggested to apply mind mapping as one of various alternative technique in teaching writing descriptive text. Yet, the teachers should focus on the following aspects design a suitable model of concept mapping, design the lesson plans, choose the model texts, compose tasks, and allocate the time since more time is required when it comes to low students.
