Improving Students Reading Comprehension On Recount Text By Using Numbered Head Together For Seventh Grade At SMP LPPUK Lawang
Reading is an activity to understand what the text contains. As one of the language skills, reading contributes to the success of language learning together with the other skills. Reading enables students to find out information from an array of texts, ranging from textbooks, newspapers, magazines, advertisements, brochures, and the like. According to Harmer (1998: 68) reading is beneficial not only for careers, study, and pleasure, but also for language acquisition. He further states that reading provides good models for English writing and offers opportunities to study language: vocabulary, grammar, punctuation, and the way we construct sentences, paragraphs, and texts. This research constitutes a classroom action research designed to improve the students reading comprehension through Numbered Heads Together (NHT) technique. The research problem of this study is, How can Numbered Heads Together technique be developed to improve the reading comprehension for seventh grade students of
SMP LPPUK Lawang.
To solve the problems, the researcher conducted the Classroom Action Research (CAR) to improve the students’ reading comprehension and the students’ participation by using Numbered Head Together (NHT). Moreover, the Classroom Action Research (CAR) was conducted in two cycles. The instruments utilized in each cycle were interview, observation checklist, test, questionnaire, field notes and documentation.
The students had improved their achievement significantly, it is not only on the students’ score of test but also on the participation in reading activities from the cycle I to the cycle II. In cycle I the students’ who achieved the criteria of success was 28,57% of 35 students and in cycle II the students’ who achieved the criteria of success was 85,71% of 35 students. Furthermore the students’ participation also improved from every meeting. It is over the determined criterion that is 75% or 30 students out of 35 of the students’ get score over 75.
Finally, the conclusion from this research was using Numbered Head Together (NHT) can improve students’ reading ability. There are some suggestion given by the researcher: (1) For the school: to improve the English teacher’s ability, (2) for headmaster: to support teaching and learning English process such as: learning equipment, for example kinds of picture, fairy, magazine, novel,tale and book, (3) for the teacher: the teacher should use other references book as a comparative material, it will help the teacher to explain the material and help the students to understand it, (4) for other researcher: the researcher hopes other researcher can make it well and revise correctly in procedure of teaching English.
