Social Conflict of The Main Characters In David Sedaris Novel Dress Your Family In Curduroy And Denim

The focus on this study the researcher tries to analyze a novel, especially in the main character social conflict. The researcher hopes that this analyze can be useful to enrich our knowledge in literature and understand more about social background of Western lives. Here the researcher uses novel “Dress Your Family In Curduroy and Denim”. Because that novel concerned about human being and other character to convey their message. The problems of this study such as ; What are David Sadaris’s social conflicts? What are the backgrounds of those social conflicts? The objectives of the thesis attempts to find the answer of the question above, they are; to find out the social conflicts of David Sadaris’s, to find out the background of David Sadaris’s social conflicts.The limitation of the study is to present and discuss the main character’s social conflicts faced by David Sadaris’s with father, mother, and friends.
Jones (1969:80), said that in some respects a novel is like a short story, except that is longer. Both are prose fiction, both deal with truth, both deal with problem, and conflicts. Both aim to entertain and to inform. In both, the elements of structure found plot, characterization, situation, and theme. The basic differences, between a novel and a short story are length and complexity. A novel is long story written in prose, but because it is long, it differs from short story in other ways too.
Concerning with this study, the writer uses the descriptive qualitative method. The writer collected the data from some libraries in Malang. They are State University of Malang library State University Library. The source of data was taken from the novel “Dress Your Family In Denim And Curduroy” by David Sadaris. The result of the study proves that sociological conflicts of David Sadaris are concerned between mother’s David and Denim. When he was child is trauma of his mother. His mother gives him punishment although he doesn’t know what he doing. Because of his mother never give him opinion about anything and he doesn’t associate with others people so make him introvert. The background of the conflict is when his mother gives him and his sisters punishment. He thinks that his mother cruel woman. Besides that his mother not to want associate with others people. These things make David not have friends in his school and outside house so he meets someone that invite him to homesexual community. Homesexual community make him become someone who is extrovert and happier.
Finally, the writer suggest that three will be more students who are interested in reading literary books and interested in what she has done in this thesis can use this thesis as a model to continue and developed this study. The writer acknowledge that this thesis is far from being perfect, so any criticism, suggestion, and correction will be fully accepted for the batter result in the future.
