Improving Students Speaking Narrative Ability By Using Silent Movie At XI Grade IN SMAN 1 Lawang
This study is conducted in order to improve students’ narrative speaking ability at XI grade students of SMAN 1 Lawang by using silent movie. This study is related the result of preliminary study showed that the students were still poor in English narrative speaking ability especially in giving the idea of sentences to show what the story tells about and what the message mean.
This study used a Classroom Action Research (CAR) which is conducted to solve the students’ problem in English speaking. The Classroom Action Research (CAR) was done based on Kemmis design. The researcher conducted two cycles in which each cycle consists of planning, acting, observation, and reflection. The data were gathered through quantitative and qualitative data. The quantitative data were obtained from the students’ speaking post-test. The qualitative data were gained by analyzing observation result.
The finding of study indicated that implementation of silent movie for improving students speaking narrative ability was successful since the criterion of success was achieved. The criterion was all students could pass the target score more than 78 based on the standard minimum score in the school. The result of test in cycle 1 showed that the students’ mean score only 72.27 with the description there were 20 students have passed the criteria of success. And 13 of students were still got under the criteria of success. Which the description 15 persons got 80, 5 persons got 86, 2 students got 73, 4 students got 66 and 4 students got 60, 2 students got 53 and 1 student got 0. In cycle II there were 33 students have passed the criteria of success. Which the description 13 students got 80, 5 students got 86, 15 students got 93. Based on the finding mentioned before, it showed that teaching English by silent movie able to improve speaking narrative ability. The researcher suggest that the English teacher could implemented Role Play technique silent movie in teaching speaking especially at narrative material in order to motivate students in learning English speaking
