Analyzing The Politeness Strategies In Scent Of A Woman Film Directed By Martin Brest
In language studies, pragmatics is a very wide field. It examines our use and our understanding of the language we speak and hear, read and write. When we use language, we unconsciously assume that we are talking to somebody who has grown up in the same sort of world as us. We speak not only in the situational context but also based on the culture. In different social situations, we are obligated to adjust our use of words to fit the occasion.
This research is descriptive qualitative study. The objective of this study is to find kinds of politeness strategies in Scent of a Woman film, and to find the meanings in interaction in politeness strategies in Scent of a Woman film.
The data were collected by exploring Scant of a Woman Film directed by Martin Brest, then tabulating the conversation among characters in the film. The data are analyzed using Brown and Levinson’s theoryof politeness strategy (1987).
The results of the analysis show that in this study, where it focuses on the conversation among characters in Scant of a Woman film, the strategies which are mostly used by the characters are off-the-record, positive politeness, negative politeness, and the last is bald on record. Firstly in off-the-record, the strategies that are used are overstates found 6 times, be metaphor and vague strategies which are used 5 times, tautology and rhetorical question strategy 4 times, be ironic strategy 3 times, be incomplete strategy twice, and give hints and presuppose which used once in every strategy.
Second in the positive politeness, the strategies that are used exaggerate and use in-group identity marker, which are used 4 times each strategies, asset speaker’s knowledge or concert, assert common ground, promise, give or ask reason, and thanking 3 times each strategies, Notice to attend to hearer twice, avoid disagreement twice, include both S and H in the activity, assert speaker’s knowledge or concern once, giving understanding once, and give gift to hearer are also found once.
Third in the negative politeness strategies, the strategies that are used are give difference used 8 times, be direct question 5 times, apologize 4 times, question hedge and nominalize twice, be conventional indirect 3 times, and then be pessimistic, minimize imposition found once, and go on record as incurring a debt found once.
Fourth, in the bald on record strategies that are used are imperative strategies which are used 3 times, give explanation and greeting found twice, disagreement and order found once. With the finding of the research, it can be concluded that politeness strategies are used to maintain the social value of the communication by saving the face of the hearer. Some suggestion is also recommended for pragmatic students who study politeness strategies, pragmatic lecture, and future researcher
