Psycholinguistic Analysis of Errors in Riley’s Speech Production Process in the Movie Inside Out 2
Psycholinguistics is the branch of study that explores the
connection between language and the psychological functions behind it. One
study that represents the relationship is speech production, which could
display how psychological, cognitive, and physical conditions influences
spoken language, triggering speech production problems. Several research
have looked at speech errors, although most of them focus on non –
animated speaker, and people with speech disorders. As a result, this study
examines speech production problems in a fictional setting through the
expressions of Riley, one of the characters in Inside Out 2 (2024), who has
emotional and cognitive obstacles throughout adolescence. Inside Out 2 is a
2024 American animated film about Riley's inner emotional struggle as she
undergoes new psychological phase. The focus of this study is to identify the
variety of speech production errors, the prevalent errors, and the reasons of
these errors discovered in Riley's utterances in Inside Out 2.
This study employs Levelt's (1989) speech production model and
Warren's (2013) theory of speech errors, which are supported by Clark and
Clark's (1977) description of the variables that cause speech problems. This
qualitative study is using content analysis to explain how Riley's speech
errors of production arise. The data were gathered by viewing Inside Out 2,
transcribing Riley's utterances, identifying errors, and categorizing them
based on its kind, stage, and cause using the theoretical frameworks.
