Movie is a popular media that is often used by the public besides
television, so that films have become part of the lives of some people. Films are
packaged in such a way that the messages they carry can be conveyed to the
audience. This study aims to describe the types of feminism that appear in the film
Maleficent and describe the feminism reflected in the main characters in the
Maleficent movie. This research explores feminist themes in the film "Maleficent"
using feminist theory from Tong (2009).
This research aims to identify and analyze the types of feminism depicted
in the film and to examine how the main character, Maleficent, reflects feminist
ideals. This research uses a qualitative descriptive approach by utilizing primary
data from films and secondary data from relevant literature. Analysis reveals three
types of feminism, namely liberal feminism, radical feminism, and Marxist
feminism.
These findings show how Maleficent challenges societal expectations
regarding female appearance and behavior, emphasizing resilience, forgiveness,
and assertiveness. The depiction of this character encourages a redefinition of
women's values beyond conventional beauty standards. “Maleficent” serves as a
powerful cinematic representation of feminism, featuring complex and evolving
female characters. This study contributes to the understanding of feminist
messages in popular media and highlights the importance of diverse and
empowering depictions of women in film.
