The Use Of Role Play To Improve Students’ Speaking Skill At 7th Grade Students Of Junior Hugh School
The goal of learning English is to develop the four core skill: listening,
speaking, reading, and writing. Among these, speaking speaking is essential for
daily interaction and is highly valued in fields like business and education.
However, over half of the 7th grade students at SMPI Annuriyah Malang struggled
with speaking due to shyness and hesitation. To address this, the Role Play
strategy was introduced as a fun and effective way to boost students’ confidence
and speaking ability.
This study used a Classroom Action Research (CAR) method which was
conducted to solve the students’ problem in speaking English. The subject of this
study were 15 students of the 7th grade of SMPI Annuriyah Malang. The
Classroom Action research (CAR) was done based on Kemmis and Mc Taggart
design. The researcher did two cycles which each cycle consisted of planning,
implementing, observation, and reflection. The data were gathered quantitatively
from the students’ speaking test and qualitatively by analyzing observation result
and questionnaire.
The finding of study indicated the implementation of the role play in
teaching speaking was successful since the criteria of success was achieved. In
cycle I nine students (60%) passed the test, while six students (40%) did not pass
the test. Therefore, cycle I did not meet the criteria of success, which required a
pass rate of 75% or higher. Dealing with the problem in cycle I, the researcher
conducted cycle II after revising the plan. The researcher aimed to make the
students more active by incorporating more brainstorming session, games, and
sharing activities before and after the lesson. The result of cycle II was improved,
where all the students (100%) passed the test. It showed from the improvement of
speaking score in each meeting. The observation from cycle I and cycle II also
showed significant improvement. The students were enthusiast and successfully
described an animal also demonstrated their abilities while playing their
characters.
