English–Indonesian Translation of Idiomatic Expressions in Jay Asher’s 13 Reasons Why Novel
Translation is the process of rendering written text from the source
language into the target language. In translating, sometimes the translator finds
difficulties in translating idioms because the meaning cannot be translated
lexically. Idioms are the combination of words that has a meaning that is different
from the meanings of the individual words. This research was conducted to
classify the types of idioms found in the 13 Reasons Why novel and to analyze the
translation strategy used by the translator in translating idiomatic expressions.
This research applied the descriptive qualitative method. The subject of
this research is English-Indonesian idiomatic expression contained in the 13
Reasons Why novel by Jay Asher. The object of this research is the 13 Reasons
Why novel itself. In collecting the data the researcher read the novel first in both
English and Indonesian version, then listed all the idiomatic expressions found in
the source text and their translation in the target text into the table. In analyzing
the data, this research used a technique based on Miles Huberman and Saldana’s
(2014) theory which involving three steps; data reduction, data display, and
conclusion drawing and verification
The researcher identified 150 idiomatic expressions contain in the novel.
The finding shows that the most dominant type of idioms is phrasal verbs 48%,
followed by idioms with verb as keyword 17%, prepositional phrase 12%, idioms
with noun as keywords 12%, idioms with adjective as keyword 7%, and idiomatic
pairs 4%. This research also found the translation strategy used by the translator
in translating idiomatic expressions. The finding shows that translation by
paraphrase was highly used by the translator with a total of 58%, the next
strategy used was using an idiom of similar meaning but dissimilar form 31%,
using an idiom of similar meaning and form 8% and translation by omission 3%.
In addition, phrasal verbs mostly appeared in the young adult novel is caused by
the language used is informal that is spoken in everyday conversation. Therefore
in translating phrasal verbs specifically phrasal verb idioms are quite difficult
because there is no equivalence meaning between the source language and the
target language. Futhermore, the translator use translation by paraphrase strategy
in translating idiomatic expressions so that easy for the reader to understand the
meaning.
