The Use of Captional Videos Strategy to Improve Students’ Vocabulary Mastery at Junior High School
Captional Videos is a translation in which viewers can read statements of
dialogue on the screen videos. Captional videos can make us easier and more
understand to learn and improve vocabulary. Vocabulary is the body of words
used in a particular language. Students’ vocabulary mastery means that the
students have the ability in understanding and using the word and meaning. The
larger vocabulary the students master, the better they perform their language. By
having a limited vocabulary, the students will find difficulties in mastering
English skill. To improve students’ vocabulary mastery, the teacher should use a
media that support the student learning process. Watching videos with captions
can represent strategies that seen useful in vocabulary learning. Through captions,
we can easily understand the storyline or information we want to covey.
This research aimed to investigate how captional videos strategy as a
media improve students' vocabulary. The research design of this study was
Classroom Action Research (CAR). The subject of the research were 32 students
at eighth grade of junior high school. The data were collected by test, observation
checklist, and questionnaire. The researcher conducted two cycles and ended with
final test in every cycle. Each cycle students must get score above the criteria of
success 75 in SMPN 1 Gedeg.
Based on the result of vocabulary test in Cycle I and Cycle II there were
significant improvement. The result from the test who passed the Minimum
Criteria of Success in Cycle I was 70% and the result in Cycle II was 86%. The
data showed that there was improvement from each cycle. The finding of this
study shows that using captional videos can improve students' vocabulary and it
can be an effective strategy in teaching English.
