Case Study of University Students’ Motivation to be English Teachers
Being English teachers is not easy. There are a lot of preparations that
have to be done. In Indonesia, English is known as a foreign language, so that
there are many people cannot speak English well. The university students or preservice teachers must have motivation to make sure themselves have good quality
to teach their students. Thus, this study aims at revealing about the reasons that
make the English education department students want to be and get motivated to
be English teachers. It also intends to reveal how the pre-service teachers can
consistently be motivated until they become the real English teachers.
This study was conducted in Universitas PGRI Kanjuruhan Malang,
especially in English Education Department. The researcher used qualitative
research method as the design of this study. The subject was from 60 pre-service
teachers of English Education Department. The participants were the final year
students since they already got internship program. The data were obtained from
close-ended questionnaire and interview. To check the validity of the data, this
study used method triangulation.
Based in the analysis, the most of the participants want to be English
teachers of their own preference. They got motivation from themselves or from
people around, family, friends, teachers, etc. Preparations are important for the
pre-service teachers since their English level were still in intermediate level. The
pre-service teachers also had an internship to practice themselves on teaching
experiences. It trains their confident to face the students from any backgrounds,
characters. Their skills will expand and grow as time passing by. The pre-service
teachers will do the theories of teaching during study in university to their
internship
