Improving Students’ Writing Skill of Procedure Text by Using Picture Series at SMAI Al Hikmah Bululawang

The aims of this research was to improve the students’ skill in writing
procedure text by using picture series for the eleventh grade of SMAI Al Hikmah
Bululawang. The preliminary research showed that the students had a problem in
the teaching technique that the teacher used in teaching learning proccess and most
students had less motivation in learning English. The English teacher mostly
dominated by doing task in text book or LKS. So, the students feel bored to get
involved in teaching learning activities. There was no creativity in delivering the
lesson that made them feel bored. Therefore, the researcher used picture series to
handle that problems.
The research was done in SMAI Al Hikmah Bululawang in July 2020. The
subject of the study was the students of class XI IPA of SMAI Al Hikmah
Bululawang consisting of 29 students. It was classroom action research. The
researcher did several steps for implementation cycle based on Kemmis and
McTaggart. There were preliminary study, finding, planning, implementing,
observing, and reflecting. In collecting data, the researcher applied several
techniques including observation, test, and questionnaire.
The findings showed that the teacher’s implementation in using picture
series is interesting. It is proved with the students’ responses after using the picture
series are they feel better, more interested, more understand and more enthusiasm to
write about procedure text. Before the actions were conducted, the students
considered writing as a difficult lesson, feel bored, and they never had interesting
media to be used in writing skill. The improvements covered : 1) The students
consider writing as an easily and interesting lesson, indicated by their enthusiasm to
write, 2) Students generated and organized their ideaa more easily in a good order,
3) Picture series improved the students’ skill in writing procedure text in terms of
generic structure, goal or purpose, material or ingredients, methods or step, and
language feature. The researcher found that the students’ writing skill were
improved. It can be seen from the mean score of the students in writing procedure
text before using picture series was 68,2. Then, after using picture series, the result
showed that means score in writing procedure text was 77,9. It can be concluded
that the use of picture series could improve the students’ writing skills of procedure
text. The researcher conducted in one cycle. It was done because in cycle one, the
criteria of success had bee achieved. The students’ reach the score that already
provided in the criteria of success.
