The Analysis of Belis Symbols Used By Christian and Muslim Communities In Mamboro, Central Sumba
Belis is one of the traditions of the Mamboro people. It is a dowry given by the
groom’s family to the bride. In this case, Belis is determined by the bride’s family and
submitted to the groom’s family. In the Belis tradition, there are symbols in the view of
the Christian community. The Muslim community also practices the Belis tradition not
only practiced for differences in symbols and meanings of symbols in these two
communities.
This research employed a qualitative descriptive method to determine the
symbols and meanings of symbols of Belis in Mamboro, Central Sumba. This study
conducted from April to May 2023. In Mamboro Central Sumba. Four participants
represented the Christian community, while three participants represented the Muslim
community. This research utilized documentation data in the form of photographs from
each community that has practiced the Belis tradition and videos from YouTube that
contain the Belis tradition. Data collection, and data analysis consisted of five stages as
follows; recording interviews, copying interview results, copying data based on the
Belis symbol and the meaning of the symbols in denotation, connotation, and myth
meaning as well as interpreting the functions and statements of participants, making
conclusions about the differences between the Belis symbols and the meanings of
symbols from the two communities.
