The Differences between Flash Card and Spelling Bee Games for Enhancing Vocabulary Mastery among Junior High School Students
Vocabulary skill is often seen as an essential tool for second language
learners because a limited vocabulary in a second language hinders successful
communication. This study aims to investigate the difference in effectiveness
between using flashcards and spelling bee games in improving vocabulary
mastery among junior high school students. Vocabulary mastery is a crucial
foundation in English language learning, and engaging and effective methods are
needed to motivate students. This research uses a quantitative approach with a
quasi-experimental design. The sample in this study was selected using the total
sampling method. This research was conducted in class VII of SMP PGRI 6
Malang in the academic year 2024/2025.
This research used three classes; two experimental classes and one control
class. The first experimental class group was taught using flashcards, the second
experimental class group was taught using spelling bee while the control group
was not given any treatment. Before the treatment, all three groups were given a
pre-test to measure their initial vocabulary mastery. After being given treatment to
each class 5 times, all three groups were given the same post-test to measure the
increase in vocabulary mastery
