The Effectiveness of Video Blogs on Students’ Speaking Fluency
Speaking fluency is one of the key components that is essential in speaking
performance. Being able to communicate fluently in a foreign language is the
number one goal for many language students. Students who have already entered
college should be trained in their speaking practice to enhance their speaking
fluency. The existence of a Vlog (Video Blog) is a potential tool to facilitate EFL
students’ speaking practice using the TPACK framework. The research was
expected: (1) to find out the significant effect of video blogs on the speaking fluency
of second-semester students of the English Education Department at Universitas
PGRI Kanjuruhan Malang, (2) to investigate the students’ perception of the use of
vlogs to increase their speaking fluency.
This research used a quantitative with a statistical design approach and was
supported by questionnaire and interview data. In this research, a pre-experimental
design was conducted using a one-group pretest-posttest design. This research was
conducted at Universitas PGRI Kanjuruhan Malang. The subjects of this research
were 25 second-semester students majoring in English Education. The researcher
used close-ended questionnaires and semi-structured interviews to support the data.
The results of this research indicate that there was a significant difference
between students’ speaking fluency scores before and after being given a treatment
using vlogs. The findings of the present study revealed that vlogs can engage
students when employing up-to-date issues and help them become more fluent in
speaking English. Students may utilize vlogs to speak in monologues in which they
express thoughts and share experiences by talking about a certain subject, engaging
the viewer's focus on what they are saying.
Moreover, making vlogs as a teaching technique had good responses from
the students in their way of increasing their fluency in speaking English. The results
show that vlogs are innovative and beneficial media for learning speaking by
implementing TPACK, especially in terms of fluency. Students were able to speak
English well and comprehensively, felt more confident, started trying to think
quickly, and had a better focus on speaking after creating vlogs. Thus, vlogs might
be used in the teaching and learning process, particularly to strengthen students'
speaking fluency
