Teaching Vocabulary by Using Storytelling Technique for Junior High School: Teachers’ Perspective
Teaching and learning vocabulary is an integral part of English language
learning since it is the basic sub-skill for someone who wants to learn an English
language. Thus, it is essential to teach English vocabulary to students. English
language learners faced many problems in learning vocabulary since they have to
memorize a large number of vocabularies day by day. In vocabulary teaching,
storytelling is one of the effective techniques to improve students' vocabulary
learning.
This research aimed to find out the teachers perspective on the use of
storytelling in teaching vocabulary at junior high school. The study employed
descriptive qualitative design in the form of case study. The participants of this
study were three English teachers of SMPN 1 Pronojiwo. Two instruments were
used in this study which included: interview and questionnaire. The process of
data analysis included data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing
and verification. The data gathered were then verified by an expert validator.
The result of this study indicated teachers' perspective on the use of
storytelling in teaching vocabulary. Based on the research questions there are two
indicates included: Teachers' perspective on the use of storytelling which focus on
the selection of stories, the use of Bahasa Indonesia to clarify the meaning, and
the benefits of using storytelling. The Challenges focus on students' English
proficiency and the length of the text. In relation to the aforementioned findings, it
can be concluded that storytelling was possible to be implemented in vocabulary
learning. Based on the perspectives above, storytelling was able to attract students'
attention in learning and students' vocabulary increased more after learning using
storytelling.
