Online Pictorial Word Puzzle in Improving Students’ Vocabulary Mastery
Vocabulary plays an important role in learning English. Vocabulary is a basic
component in learning a foreign language specifically for mastering English language
skills. Mastering English vocabulary is a problem in general conditions both formal and
informal communication. Many students still lack mastery of English vocabulary because
they think that English is not very important, boring, and difficult to understand.
Inappropriate teacher techniques are also a problem, where teachers only ask students to
know vocabulary from a dictionary. This requires an emphasis on the importance of
increasing students' vocabulary mastery through innovative and interesting learning
methods. Therefore, to support vocabulary acquisition, teachers innovate by providing
Online Pictorial Word Puzzle to overcome the problem. This research shows the potential
of using digital tools to improve learning outcomes. Besides, the use of visual aids in the
form of puzzles can make vocabulary learning more interesting and interactive. The
objective of this study to know the implementation of online pictorial word puzzle can
increase students’ vocabulary at SMP PGRI 3 Kalipare – Malang.
This study used Classroom Action Research (CAR) method. Further, the subject of
the research was 20 students at grade 7th PGRI 3 Kalipare-Malang who had some
problems in mastering vocabulary. The procedure of the research used two cycles which
are cycle 1 and cycle II. In each cycle there are planning, implementing, observing and
reflecting. The researcher uses descriptive analysis for describing the result of
questionnaire and observation checklist. Quantitative data is obtained from student test
scores.
