An Analysis of Teachers’ Strategies in Online Speaking Class at junior High School in Malang
Mastering English communicative competence for the students are not
easy. It of course, provides challenge for teachers. Moreover, the pandemic covid-
19 raises a query whether the students can learn online. Teachers must be able to
adapt and present online learning strategies that suit the needs of students.This
study aimed to find out the teachers’ teaching strategies and to explore the
teachers’ difficulties in implementing teaching strategies in online speaking class
at junior high school in Malang.
The study employed descriptive qualitative design in the form of case
study. The participants involved in this study were three English teachers of SMP
Kartika IV-8 Malang and SMP Taman Siswa Malang. Two instruments were used
in this study which included: observation and interview. The process of data
analysis included data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing and
verification. The data gathered were then verified by an expert validator.
The result of this study indicated that the teachers tended to use various
teaching strategies in online speaking class which included: discussion,
simulation, and questioning. Those strategies were claimed to be effective to teach
speaking through online. The teachers also encountered some problems in
implementing the strategy in online speaking class. In group discussion, the
teachers were difficult to manage the time and to monitor the students’ activities.
Internet connection also gave difficulties for the teachers. In simulation strategy,
the teachers were also difficult to monitor and assessed the students’ work.
Finally, the teachers also found problems in implementing questioning strategy.
This strategy could not cover all students. So, other students tended to be silent.
