An analysis of the Meaning of Symbols Used in Traditional Panah Dance in Kei Islands, Maluku
Panah dance is one of the traditional dances and a popular dance in Kei
Islands. This traditional dance is a war dance attraction that has artistic,
philosophical and historical values. Panah dance is often performed at welcoming
guests and important events. The uniqueness of this dance lies in the dancers who
seem to be at war and are led by the war chief or Kapitan. Therefore, the researcher
has been interested in studying meaning of symbols by formulating two research
problem such as: what are the symbols used in traditional Panah dance, and what
are the meaning of symbols used in traditional Panah dance?
The research design of this study used Ethnography research as a method
that used direct observation of human in socio-cultural context. Data collection
techniques were observation, interview and document study. The data validity
technique used methodological triangulation techniques. The results of this study
suggested that Panah dance has many symbols used such as Kain Merah, Celana
Merah & Celana Hitam, Arang, Parang, Tombak, Panah, Tifa/Tafuli, Gong,
Suling. Every symbol has the meaning itself such as Kain Merah and Celana Merah
symbolize the toughness, courage, tenacity and might as a man in the Kei Islands.
Celana Hitam and Arang have a symbol that indicates the identity of the dark
skinned Kei people and also to facilitate disguise during war. Parang and Tombak
are identical to men and symbolizes the strength of men. Panah are used to hunt
animals and are commonly used to protect themselves from enemies.
After the researcher found and discussed the symbols and their meanings in
traditional Panah dance, the researcher made a conclusion of the research finding
and discussion. From the result of this research, it was obvious in Panah dance used
some symbols, and every symbol has own meaning. The researcher hopes this
research can help other researcher who want to continue or do the research in the
same field.
