The Use of Teams Games Tournament (TGT) to Improve Student’s Speaking Ability at SMP PGRI 6 Malang, East Java in Academic Year 2022/2023
English is one of the languages that students must master; therefore, it is
important to learn English by paying attention to the elements contained therein.
One of them is speaking ability. Based on the researcher's observation when
teaching English in class 9B SMP PGRI 6 Malang, the researcher found problems
related to students’ speaking in English. The process of teaching and learning in
the classroom was still passive because the teacher did not use innovative
strategies; as a result, some students also experienced difficulties in memorizing
vocabulary and difficulty arranging words into a sentence in English then causing
them not interested in actively participating in verbal activities. Based on the
problems, the researcher implemented Team Games Tournament (TGT) as the
alternative technique in the teaching-learning process, especially in improving
students’ speaking ability.
The objective of this research is to find out the use of the Teams Games
Tournament (TGT) Technique to improve students’ speaking ability at SMP PGRI
6 Malang. The subjects of this study were class 9B students of SMP PGRI 6
Malang in the academic year 2022/2023, consisting of 23 students and this study
used Classroom Action Research (CAR). Classroom Action Research consists of
four major steps: planning, implementing, observing, and reflecting. The
implementation was conducted in one cycle consisting of four meetings. The
implementation of the action was said to be successful if more than 75% of the
students had achieved the minimum score of 70, and if the result of the percentage
of the observation checklist is equal to or more than 70%, then if the result of the
students' positive response toward team game tournament technique in speaking is
equal to or more than 75%. The collection of data was done by observation, test,
and questionnaire.
After conducting the test and analyzing the result of the observation
checklist, the researcher found that from Cycle 1, the criteria of success had been
fulfilled. The researcher found that 82,6% of students could achieve the minimum
score of 70, and the students’ activeness showed that 76,5% were active. The
result of student responses to the questionnaire reveals that 80% of 23 students
gave positive responses.
In conclusion, this study proves that Team Games Tournament (TGT)
technique could improve the students’ speaking ability and make the class more
enjoyable and also active in the teaching-learning process. This study suggests for
the next researcher should analyze another aspect of speaking, which is to know
that the Team Games Tournament (TGT) technique increases all of the aspects of
speaking.
