The Translation Strategies of Idiomatic Expressions Used in The Subtittles American Romantic Comedy Movie Called “Why Him

This research aims to analyze the types of idioms used in the subtitle transcript and the translation strategies that used in the subtitle transcript of "Why Him" movie. The movie explains the differences between the 2 generations X and Y. This movie itself is intended for youth people and above, so that many slang and idioms were found by researcher. This research is different than previous research, because of the number of idioms & complex data.
The source of the data was taken from the movie “Why Him?”. The data were analyzed using Fernando’s theory, Baker’s theory, and Newmark’s theory. The research data collection instrument was the researcher herself. Researcher are planners, executors of data collection, analysts, data interpreter and in the end he became the pioneer of his research results. Therefore, to get valid data, researcher use triangulation of data sources through an expert translator.
According to the findings of researcher in "Why Him?" movie there are 55% pure idioms, 22% semi-idioms, and 23% literal idioms. In addition, when translating idioms, the researcher employs two translation strategies: Baker and Newmark. In this study, the researcher found that in pure idioms, translation strategies by Baker, researcher found, namely 65% translations by paraphrase and 35% translations by omission. while for translation strategies Newmark, researcher found 6% cultural equivalents, 2% descriptive equivalent, 46% shifts or transpositions, 9% modulation, 6% compensation, 6% componential analysis, and 25% reduction and expansion. On semi-idioms, in translation strategies by Baker, the researcher found 100% similiar meanings but dissimilar forms. while translation strategies by Newmark, 6% cultural equivalent, 6% modulation, 56% compensation, 6% componential analysis, 25% reduction and expansion. And lastly, literal idioms. In this type of idiom, the translation strategies by Baker, researcher found are 100% similar meanings and forms, and for translation strategies by Newmark, the researcher found 100% synonymy. Finally, the researcher hope that this research can be useful for institutions as well as for future researcher, especially to students at Universitas PGRI Kanjuruhan Malang in case the study about idiom is very useful for students to improve their knowledge about the idioms word. By knowing the results of this study, the researcher hoped that the students will know the types of idioms, and how the translation strategies work in this idioms. It is hoped that the results of this study can be used as a reference in conducting further research on types of idioms and translation strategies in a more perfect studies.
