An Analysis of African American Vernacular English (AAVE) Morphological Processes in “The Greatest Showman” Movie
The researcher investigates African American Vernacular English (AAVE)
morphological processes in “The Greatest Showman” movie, which is a movie
elling someone‟s life struggle. AAVE is a dialect that is often spoken by many
people today and part of language variation that can increase existing diversity.
Not only used in daily conversation but also used in songs and films. The
mportant of study AAVE is we don‟t misinterpret the word that is not Standard
English. So, we understand the millennial language.This research aims to identify
how AAVE words in the movie formed in Standard English and types of word
formation.
This research used qualitative approach in document analysis to describe
he AAVE morphological processes in The Greatest Showman movie. The data
are taken from the movie “The Greatest Showman” which is downloaded from
LayarKaca21 website. The writer used the theory proposed by O‟Grady and
Guzman (1996), Hatch and Brown (1995), Baayen (1995), and Chiat (1986) to
analyze types of word formation of AAVE words in the movie. The word
formation that analyzed such as compounding, borrowing, coinage, blending,
clipping, back formation, inflection, derivation, acronyms, abbreviation and
reduplication.
The researcher used 5 steps to analyze the data. The first is listening,
watching and finding the AAVE words in the movie. The second is determining
he types of AAVE word formation. The third is giving the explanation of the
AAVE words found in the utterances. The fourth is validating the results of data
analysis. And the last is making conclusions based on results.
The result of this study are, found some AAVE words then turned it into
Standard English and types of word formation. There are five types of word
formation found in “The Greatest Showman” Movie. According to the data, the
first word formation is Clipping, the second is Blending, the third is Trisyllabic,
he fourth is Abbreviation, the fifth is Personal Pronoun and the last is Borrowing.
The most dominant types of word formation in this movie are Clipping and
Blending.This research is expected to be a reference for the next researcher with
he same topic and to give a deeper understanding about AAVE for the readers.
