Improving Students’ Vocabulary Achievement Through Crossword Puzzle At Tenth Grade Of Sman 1 Kayan Hilir
Vocabulary is seen as L2 learners’ main root of problems. This reflects
that the vocabulary mastery gives more difficulty to the learners. Based on the
preliminary study at SMAN 1 Kayan Hilir, Many students had low vocabulary
achievement and motivation in learning vocabulary. It was because the
teachers‘teaching media did not attract the students’ interest in learning
vocabulary. Therefore, implementing an effective method and media for teaching
and learning process is seen to be essential to increase students’ vocabulary
achievement. The current study was aimed to investigate how the use of
This study used Classroom Action Research (CAR) and was conducted at
SMAN 1 Kayan Hilir. Classroom Action Research consists of four major steps:
planning, action, observation and reflection. The action research was conducted in
some cycles. After one cycle, there would be a reflection of the action research.
The implementation of the action was said to be successful if more than 75% of
the students had achieved the minimum score of 75, the students’ involvement
during the learning process increased, and the students showed learning interest.
The action of this study was conducted in one cycle. The subject of this research
was all the first grade students at SMAN 1 Kayan Hilir. There were 25 students in
total. Two instruments used which include: test and observation.
Based on the findings, the implementation of crossword puzzle game was
successful to improve the students’ vocabulary achievement. In the first of the
action, the students looked confused when the researcher explained the objective
of the study and the teaching media used. In the second meeting, the problems
were still appeared. The progress was seen in the third meeting. The majority of
the students understood the material given and how to play and answer the
crossword puzzle game. In the fourth meeting the significant progress was seen.
The students seemed much more active, especially when carrying out group
discussions. It was also supported by the result of observation done by the
collaborator. The students were actively involved during the learning process.
Additionally, the students were enthusiastic in taking part in each activity during
the learning process and showed learning interest.
Teachers have important roles in developing the students’ vocabulary
achievement. Therefore, choosing an appropriate technique or media is highly
suggested. The learning vocabulary process that was done through crossword
puzzle game was seen to be effective. This study suggests that crossword puzzle
game is able to improve students’ vocabulary achievement.
