An Analysis Of Students’ Perception Toward The Implementation Of Tpr In Teaching Vocabulary At Primary School
Vocabulary is frequently viewed as a critical tool for second language
learners because a restricted vocabulary in a second language impedes successful
communication. However, mastering vocabulary is to easy. Teachers are required
to use an appropriate media to teach vocabulary the students. One of the media
that can be used is Total Physical Response (TPR). TPR is believed to be effective
to be used in teaching vocabulary. However, the students’ perception toward the
use of TPR yet has been measured. This study aimed to identify the students’
perception toward the implementation of TPR in learning vocabulary at primary
school.
The study employed descriptive qualitative design. 21 fourth grader
students of primary school were involved in this study. Two instruments were
used in this study which included: questionnaire and interview. The process of
data analysis included data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing
and verification. The data gathered were then verified by an expert validator.
The result of this study indicated that the majority of the participants had high
perception toward the implementation of TPR in learning vocabulary. This was
known from the 3 aspects that had been identified during the study. Those aspects
were such as: attitude, advantage, and challenge of the implementation of TPR.
TPR was viewed as a fairly interesting learning technique. Learning using TPR
was fun because it was packaged attractively like a game. The movements in TPR
were easy to follow and imitate. This eased the participants to understand the
material in learning vocabulary. Furthermore, many advantages in learning
vocabulary using TPR were found such as ease students to understand the
vocabulary, increase motivation, and improving vocabulary mastery. The findings
of this study suggest that the use of TPR in learning vocabulary at primary school
is recommended.
