Teaching English Vocabulary for Mentally Retarded Students Using Scientific Approach
Scientific approach is a teaching method that uses a carefully structured step-by-step approach in providing instruction. For mentally retarded children, a structured and careful teaching method is needed to facilitate their understanding of learning English vocabulary. This study aims to: (1). Describe the implementation of a scientific approach to English vocabulary subjects; (2). Describe the obstacles to implementation a scientific approach to learning English vocabulary for mentally retarded children; (3). Describe the benefits of implementation a scientific approach to learning English vocabulary for mentally retarded children.
The research method used is descriptive qualitative. The subject in this study was one teacher with 3 students of class VII SMPLB SLBN Pembina. Data collection techniques using observation techniques, interviews, and documentation. Data analysis is done by organizing the data, breaking it down into units, synthesizing it, arranging it into a pattern, choosing what is important and what will be studied, and making conclusions that can be told to others.
From the results of the study can be concluded that (1). The process of learning English vocabulary for mentally retarded children has applied a scientific approach with 5 activities, namely observing, asking, trying, reasoning or associating, and communicating; (2). Constraints in the Implementation of the Application of the Scientific Approach arise from within the child who has different abilities and characteristics. (3). The benefits of applying the Scientific Approach in English Vocabulary Learning such as making it easier for students to understand the learning material. This research can be concluded that teaching English vocabulary with a scientific approach can be applied to mentally retarded children with adjustments according to the abilities and needs of children during the learning process.
