Item Analysis on English Summative Test of Tenth Grade Students at SMAN 7 Malang
Item analysis needs to be done in order to determine the quality of the test to be tested. This is crucial to do because the test must measure students’ learning outcomes against a learning material. Therefore, the test must be of good quality and in accordance with the criteria for a good test. In this study, the researcher would like to investigate the quality of English summative test for tenth grade students at SMAN 7 Malang based on the validity, reliability, difficulty index, and discriminating power.
In this study, the researcher applied descriptive quantitative method in conducting research. The selected respondents were students of class X MIPA 1, X IPS 4, and X IPS 5 in the 2021/2022 academic year of SMAN 7 Malang totaling 107 students of 415 students’ population. The data collection was carried out using the documentation technique where the researcher collected documents in the form of students' answer distribution, key answers, and English summative test paper. The data analysis was carried out using IBM SPSS 22 and Anates 4.0.9 program to obtain the validity, reliability, difficulty index, and discriminating power of the test.
The results of the study showed that: (1) there were 17 items or 85% of the test items were declared valid and as many as 3 items or 15% of test items were invalid, (2) the reliability of the test items included in the high category with an index of 0.670, (3) based on the difficulty index, items with a level of difficulty in the difficult category were 5 items (25%), in the medium were 9 items (45%), and in the easy category there were 6 items (30%), (4) based on discriminating power, there were 8 items (40%) were revealed as very good items, 4 items (20) were reasonably good, 3 items (15%) were marginal items, and 5 items (25%) categorized as poor items. To sum up, English summative test items for tenth grade students of SMAN 7 Malang in 2021/2022 academic year are considered
valid regarding validity since 85% of test items are valid. The test can be reused for subsequent tests. Regarding reliability, the test items are considered reliable. The result will be consistent if the test is retested in the same group of students. Based on difficulty index, English summative test items are considered have good difficulty index since 45% of items on medium category. The test can be recorded in question bank and reused for subsequent tests. Regarding discriminating power, the test items are considered have good discriminating power because 40 % of items are very good items and 20% of them are revealed reasonably good. The test can be recorded in the question bank and it can be reused for subsequent tests.
