An Analysis Of Teachers’ Motivation In Teaching English
This study examines the intrinsic and extrinsic motivation of teachers in teaching English. Teacher motivation is very important to improve because teacher motivation greatly affects student achievement. Current studies mostly discuss teacher motivation from outside. This study aims to determine teacher motivation in teaching English from outside and within the teacher himself.
The respondents of this study were four English teachers in Vocational High School of Muhammadiyah 02 Pagak. This research belonged to descriptive qualitative research. The main data were the teachers’ motivation in teaching English. The researcher used two instruments to gather data from the respondents:
(1) Questionnaire was distributing via google form and (2) Interview using telephone cellular. The data analysis technique is the process arrangement and data categorization. In this study, the researcher used data triangulation to analyze the data. the data studied was in the form of a dialogue.
The result of descriptive analysis showed that teachers got support from outside and within. Based on the first research question, it was discovered that extrinsic teachers’ motivation were remuneration and incentives, institutional environment, learning material and facilities, career development. Intrinsic motivation of teachers were recognition and prestige, accountability, and voice. The percentage of extrinsic motivation was 100% got high motivation. On the other hand, there were 50% teachers got high motivation from inside and 50% got very high motivation from inside.
Finally, the researcher suggests Teachers should put aside their own egos because they have the responsibility to impart knowledge, educate, and also provide experiences to students. If the motivation they receive is still lacking they should continue to teach seriously. The headmaster must also provide a special assessment of his performance in order to be more motivated to teach English. For other researchers are expected to develop research by conducting research on other variables such as headmaster leadership, teacher professionalism, teacher performance or work environment that can affect teacher work motivation, as well as conducting a wider population and using other research designs.
