Students’ Perception Towards Skimming Scanning Technique For Reading Comprehension
Reading is the most important skill that should be mastered by all students well. By having the mastery of reading skill, learners are able to get a lot of knowledge, information and pleasure. There are several techniques for reading, techniques are needed to help learners achieve reading comprehension and to improve students’ reading abilities. One the techniques are skimming and scanning technique. The researcher chooses this technique because skimming and scanning technique are mutually sustainable to improve students’ reading skills also on their reading comprehension.
This research aimed to know the students’ perception towards skimming scanning for reading comprehension. In this study, the researcher focused on students’ perception towards skimming scanning technique in reading narrative text.
This study used descriptive qualitative analysis method, the researcher took responses one class Literal Reading which was students at second semester in English Department of Kanjuruhan University. The number of the students in this class were 15 students. The researcher used some instruments including: observation, field note, and questionnaire. The data sources of this study was the questionnaire, the questionnaire had some several aspects which included; material aspects, learning method aspects, and text aspects.
Based on the results of this study, from the three indicators investigated, material aspects got a high perception by 80% the students chose agree. The second indicator is learning method aspects. It was also categorized as high perception by 85% of the students chose agree. The third indicator `was also categorized high perception by 85%.
The results, the students believed that Skimming Scanning Technique (SST) eases them to comprehend and find specific information on the text. They also believe that Skimming Scanning Technique is really effective for learning reading. However the students think that SST cannot encourage them to learn more about reading. They think that SST is not really interesting.
It is highly suggested to the teacher that the SST should be applied and combined with something interesting, so that the students will enthusiastically follow the learning process and SST can encourage the students to learn reading more.
