A Phenomenological Study: English Speaking Problems Faced By Efl University Learners In Universitas Pgri Kanjuruhan Malang
This study mainly discussed a phenomenon of English speaking problems faced by the senior EFL university learners in Universitas PGRI Kanjuruhan Malang. The aims of this study are: (1) To know the learning process carried out by EFL university learners. (2) To find out English speaking problems faced by EFL university learners in Universitas PGRI Kanjuruhan Malang. (3) To know the efforts by EFL university learners in Universitas PGRI Kanjuruhan Malang to overcome English speaking problems.
This study used qualitative method. The technique of collecting the data used an in-depth interview as primary data sources and documentation of participant’s study report as secondary data sources. The researcher took 7 students of class 2017 English Education Department based on their survival speaking grades on the second semester study for whom got grades A, A, A-, A-. A-, A-, and B+ to be interviewed via Zoom meeting and the researcher recorded the interview session. Then, the data was analyzed using a phenomenological study analyses.
The result of this study showed that the Ninth-semester EFL university learners in Universitas PGRI Kanjuruhan Malang faced some problems in speaking English because being afraid of making mistakes, no idea what to say in English, lack of confidence, feeling nervous, not used to speak English, and also not into the learning method. They also tried to learn speaking English by many kinds of method such as reading some English texts, and watching some Western movies to learn grammar. Listening to the English songs, and using Google translate to learn pronunciation, and also making a list of the uncommon words to learn vocabulary. Meanwhile, they tried to overcome the problems in speaking English by always practicing to speak English in any situation since they realize that they are from English education background so it is very important to improve their skill in speaking English.
