The Effect of Visual Vocabulary Application on the Students’ Vocabulary Mastery
Vocabulary knowledge is frequently viewed as a critical tool for second language learners because a restricted vocabulary in a second language impedes successful communication. However, mastering vocabulary is not easy. Teachers are required to use an appropriate media to teach vocabulary the students.
Implementing media through technology is seen to be effective. It will ease the students to understand the word since it is visualized by the picture shown on the media. This study aims to investigate whether the use of visual vocabulary application as teaching media provides a positive significant effect on the students’ vocabulary mastery. The quasi experimental research design was used in this study. This research was conducted at the first grade of SMP Diponegoro Kedung banteng in the academic year of 2020/2021. There were two kinds of classes; experimental class and control class which consist of 27 students for each class, so the sample of this study was 54 students. Each class was given treatment for four times. The experimental class was taught by visual vocabulary application as teaching media, while the control class was taught by using conventional technique. The data of this study were taken through test in form of pre-test and post-test. The calculation of the data was done using SPSS 20Version.
Based on the data analysis, the research finding showed that there was a significant difference between experimental class’s vocabulary score and control class’s vocabulary score. The t – score was 2.55, this score had a significant value of .014 less than 0.05, which means that Ha (alternative hypothesis) is accepted.
The mean score of vocabulary test done by the experimental class, based on the result of Independent sample t-test of post-test, was 83.41. Meanwhile, vocabulary test done by the control class, based on the result of Independent sample t-test of post-test, was 75.11. It meant that the implementation of visual vocabulary application gave significant positive effect on students’ vocabulary mastery.
The researcher finds 2 challenges during research. The first was a matter of time management. It was happened because of students’ indiscipline. The second is the students did not understand the feature in visual vocabulary application. However, the researcher found that the result of the mean score in the experimental class is higher than the result in the control group. In other words, the students who are given visual vocabulary application obtained higher achievement than the students who are given conventional technique. Thus, it is concluded that the visual vocabulary application is an effective medium for teaching vocabulary mastery.
