An Analysis of Students’ Speaking Anxiety in Non-Formal School Setting.
Speaking anxiety is claimed as the major constraints faced by EFL
learners in learning speaking. Hence, it is assumed that massively frequent foreign
language learners were experienced anxiety within the process of learning
English, especially while in the speaking activities. This study aimed to identified
the speaking anxiety faced by the students’ of in non-formal school setting and the
objective was to find out the factor influenced and strategies to reduce speaking
anxiety.
This study applieda descriptive qualitative design and was conducted at
SMP Insan Terpadu Paiton Probolinggo. The participants of this study were 17
female students of second grade at SMP Insan Terpadu Paiton Probolinggo. The
data of this study were mainly collected through two instruments which included:
observation and interview. The data that have been collected were then analyzed
using data analysis framework such as: organizing, compressing, displaying, and
concluding.
The findings of this study showed that there some factors influencing
students’ speaking anxiety. The factors come from both internal and external
factors such as factor from the students, from the material, students’ attitude,
teachers’ personality, and environment.This study also identified that there are
some strategies used by the students to reduce speaking anxiety. Those strategies
are such as: Taking a deep breath before starts speaking, practicing, making
planning, making a note, looking around, making a joke, thinking positively, and
warming up.
Teacher has important role in developing the students’ speaking skill.
Therefore, In order to improve the teaching and learning process especially in
teaching speaking, the teachers need to consider the students’ speaking anxiety.
