An Analysis of the Use of English Terms in Public Signs of Tourisms Places of Malang “The Case of Bahasa Indonesian to English Translation”
English translation can be found in public signs media. English translation
link the users and outside world filled with variety and kinds of oddities.
Therefore, this present study is expected to find out the translation mistakes of the
use of English terms in public signs of tourism places of Malang “the case of
Bahasa Indonesian to English translation”.
The research used descriptive qualitative design. The purpose of this
research was to find out English terms in public signs of Tourism places around
Malang. A qualitative case study was employed in collecting the data of the study.
Based on research finding from 6 indicators used in the study, there were 3
indicators identified which include: mistranslation, spelling errors, grammatical
mistakes. The errors identified was mistranslation in the data that scored 69% and
followed by spelling errors that scored 25% and grammatical mistakes that scored
6%. It seemed that the way people translated public sign was influenced by their
first language and knowledge of English.
The overall findings of the study suggest that people tend to make errors
of mistranslation in translating public sign. Hopefully this study will give
information/data about the mistakes found in the translation through English
terms. It can build English terms’ perception in enhancing their Indonesia to
English translation. This study can be as a reference for the further researchers
who want to conduct related research on English terms translation
