Analysis Of Code Switching Used By The Teacher In Teaching Learning Process
Code switching is a phenomenon in bilingual or multilingual in community,
for example in Indonesia where people use more than one language to
communicate, including in the teaching and learning process at SMK PGRI 3
MALANG. Based on the research, the teacher uses code switching in the teaching
process for the learning material is conveyed to students and for communication
with students. In the code switching process, the teachers use Indonesian more
than English, sometimes using the local language, Javanese. The purpose of this
study is to determine the types of code switching, the function of the code
switching teacher, and the language involved.
This research uses descriptive qualitative method. The researcher appointed
three teachers to be the research subjects. In collecting data, researchers use
observation and interviews. Procedure of data analysis in this research are
preparing the data for analysis, reading and understanding all the data, coding and
classifying the data (expression), the next data analysis involves making an
interpretation or meaning of the data, and the final step is making conclusion.
Researchers also use data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing or
verification in analyzing the data. In this research use the theory of code switching
from Poplack (1980). That are three types of code switching, namely
inter-sentential switching, intra-sentential switching, and tag switchin. In this
research also used the theory of the function of code switching by Mattson and
Burenhult (1999). Three types of function of code switching, that are topic switch,
affective switch, and repetitive function.
In the findings of data analysis there are three types of code switching found,
namely inter-sentential code switching (24,17%), intra-sentential code switching
(59,61%), and tag switching (16,21%). The intra-sentential switching is the
highest types of code switching used by teacher because the teachers when
explained the topic learning material in the classroom used mixed language in one
sentence, the teacher used a mixture of English and Indonesian, so that students
can easily understand the material being given by the teachers. The function of
code switching used by English teachers were found three functions: topic switch
(59,06%), affective function (22,80%), and repetitive function (18,13%). The
topic switch is the highes function of code switching used by the teachers, because
topic switch can be observed by students according to language instruction.
Students can easily understand teachers explanation when the teachers used the
code switching function in the learning method. Moreover. Three languages were
also found in the teaching and learning process in the classroom, namely,
Indonesian, English, and Javanese.
Finally, it can be concluded the highest used the types of code switching is
intra-sentential switching and the highest used of function of code switching is
topic switch. In addition, most of data show that teachers used code switching to
make students get better understanding on the material. This research gives a
contribution to the readers in understanding while analyzing code switching used
by teachers in teaching learning process, and for the next researchers who are
interested in the same topic. This research can be theoretical information in this
study. Besides, this research can be used by the lecturers knowledge about the
code switching itself.
