The Effect of Using Short Silent Animations on Students’ Writing Performance
This study aims to investigate the effect of using short silent animations on students’ writing performance. The research design used in this study was quasi experimental design consisting of experimental group and control group. The population of this study was the first grade students of SMA Kristen PETRA Malang. There were 25 students of first grade students of class X IPA (experimental group) and 25 students of first grade students of class X IPS (control group) as the sample of this study. The total of participants of this study
was 50 students. There were four meetings for the researcher to apply the short silent animations. The data were obtained by conducting the writing test which was divided into two: pre-test and post-test. The focus of this study was writing narrative text. The assessment of the test result contains four aspects: organization, grammar, vocabulary, and mechanics. The data were analysis by
using quantitative descriptive statistic.
The findingsshow that the students in experimental group who were taught by using short silent animations got better improvement in writing performance than the students in control group who were taught by using story picture. It means that the short silent animations had a significant effect on students’ writing performance. The use of short silent animations as a media in writing class makes students more motivated and enthusiastic in learning. It was easy for students to generate and produce some sentences of narrative text. In addition, the result also showed that the students give better participation to the teacher in following the writing class.
Considering the result of this study, it is suggested for the further researcher to investigate the use of short silent animations on students writing performance in other genre of text. Suggestion for English teachers is that they should be creative in selecting the media in teaching and learning process. In addition, the suggestion for the students is to use the short silent animations in increasing their writing performance in English.
