Improving The Second Year Steudents' Writing Skill At SMP Islam Diponogoro Wagir
Writing is one of the basic language skills that must be mastered in language learning. Through writing, the students can interpret and express ideas, feelings, and experiences. Nevertheless, the students do not have enough mastery on the writing skill. This is based on the fact that too often the students’ piece of writing cannot be read well because it contains a lot of errors. The result of the preliminary study conducted at SMP Islam Diponegoro Wagir shows that many sentences the students produce are incomprehensible because there are a lot of errors in content, grammar, and language use. This problem is due to the lack of writing practice as the time of English class is mostly spent for reading and grammatical drills and if there is time for writing, the students are rarely encouraged to make peer correction and discussion. Besides, the students have low motivation.
To improve the students’ writing skill, this study is designed to develop inquiry-based learning strategy to teach writing. This strategy is promoted for it is believed to be able to stimulate the students to be more involved in the writing process so that their writing ability increases and they become more motivated.
Therefore, the research problem was formulated as follows: “How Can InquiryBased Learning Strategy Improve the second year students in Writing Descriptive Paragraph?”. This study employs collaborative classroom action research approach in which the teacher and researcher as a research team work together in designing the
lesson plan, implementing the action, observing the action, and making reflection. The subjects of this study were the second year students of SMP Islam Diponegoro Wagir in the first semester of the 2014-2015 academic year. This study was conducted in three cycles by following the procedure of the action research i.e. planning, implementing, observing, and reflecting.
After this research is conducted, it is found that the appropriate model of inquiry-based learning strategy to improve the students writing skill contains: (1) vii engaging the students to express their ideas in discussing activities. (2) guiding the students to make investigation by observing the given pictures and objects, reading, and sharing ideas. (3) asking them to make notes what they have investigated. (4) the students make discussion and peer editing focusing on the content and organization. (5) the students look back at their writing in order to edit the grammatical aspects and produce the final version to be submitted to the teacher. (6) reflecting the process.
The model of inquiry-based learning strategy has some strength. First, it can improve the students’ writing skill. The improvement is indicated by their average score increasing from 5.9 (59 %) in the pretest to 7.3 (73%) in the last test. Next, the strategy has also made the students more active and motivated in the writing process.
On the basis of the findings, some major suggestions are made: (1) the English teachers are recommended to consider the model of inquiry-based learning strategy developed in this study as one of many alternative strategies that can be used in teaching writing descriptive paragraph for the Islamic and or junior high school, (2) As the model of inquiry-based learning strategy takes much time, particularly, if the teacher has large classes, the teacher should group the students in learning to write so that they can help and correct each other, (3) the teacher should set the time limit in each stage of activities in the lesson plan so that in implementing the inquiry he does not spend too much time on one particular kind of activity that is less important, (4) the teacher should use Bahasa Indonesia more frequently than English in clarifying the instructions to the beginners because it is still quite difficult for the students to understand the English language and it can make them misunderstand the instructions, and, (5) the future researchers are recommended to conduct action research in elementary school
