Epl Vocational High School Students' Perceptions And Teachers' Relief On Learning English Reading Through Online Class By Google Classroom During Pandemic Covid-19
Corona virus disease (COVID 19) has affected education system around the world.
Schools are unable continue face-to-face meetings; thus, online classes become an option to
carry out. All school in Indonesia were closed so teachers and students were unavailable to
attend school. Government decided to change offline school become online. One of the
applications that could be used is Google Classroom. However, as our education system
tends to adopt conventional system, moving to the online mode is challenging at all aspects.
English reading is one of the lessons given in vocational high school, this lesson requires
students to have an ability to understand the text written in English and also able to find
many information’s on that text. This study aims to describe students’ perceptions and
teachers’ belief on learning English online during the pandemic.
This research used descriptive qualitative design to answer the problem of this
research. The subject of this study are students at twelve grades majority of computer
network engineering fourth and English teachers from SMK Bina Bangsa Dampit. Prepare
and the samples of this research were 36 students who is in the first semester and 5 English
teachers by used random sampling technique. The researcher used questionnaire, interview
and observation as instrument for this research.
Result of data analysis showed that student’s perception and teachers’ belief of
learning process through online on English reading class by Google Classroom are enough
category in every aspect, it based on student’s questionnaire 20% showed that students
didn’t feel that COVID 19 didn’t affect them and 80% students felt that COVID 19 their
lesson. Interview showed that all students need offline class and observation showed that
most of students didn’t have stable connection. Questionnaire showed that 20% English
teacher thought that COVID 19 didn’t affect their job desk besides 80% thought it affected
them. Interview for teachers showed that 80% English teacher thought that the hardest
obstacle for students is their ability to understand the English reading. And the observation
showed that most of the English teachers in SMK Bina Bangsa Dampit didn’t satisfy with
the students’ assignments.
The conclusion and the implementation showed that technically their facilities can
support them to use this method but internet connection is something important that should
be given more attention to make online class runs well. But the problem is the ability to
understand the lesson, students felt that they understand the online lesson as well as offline
lesson besides their English teachers felt unsatisfied with the assignment, they think the
students couldn’t complete the assignment well and their scores were tended to be low.
