The Correlation Between Students' Grammar Mastery And Speaking Proficiency
English becomes an important language for communication since English as a foreign language that students need to learn. In mastering English, there are four major skills to be learned in the English context, they are listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Those four major skills can be mostly derived in education field and all of them are commonly learned in school. Nowadays, the learners’ ability to learn English has been constant and monotonous, so students’ attention and learning results are less than the maximum in the process of learning English because they have the perception that English is a difficult subject to learn especially speaking skill. Some components become an aspect of success in speaking including communicative competence, pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar, and fluency. The matter of grammar becomes one of the most important aspects of language learning. Furthermore, grammar becomes the main role of English use. If a student can attain good grammar, then the English material can be studied well according to the text rules by using the appropriate grammar. So Grammar enables the students to communicate with a correct grammatical structure, properly, and the message can be conveyed clearly. The objective of this study was to know whether there was significant correlation between students’ grammar mastery and their speaking proficiency of eleventh grade students at SMAN 1 Malang.
This study aims to find out whether there is positive significant correlation between grammar mastery and speaking proficiency at 11th grade students at SMAN 1 Malang. This study used a quantitative method where the correlational technique as a design. The population in this study was MIPA class in which there were 7 classes and the researcher took 32 students as the sample of this study. In collecting the data, grammar test and speaking test was used in this research. In assessing students’ grammar mastery test score, the researcher conducted multiple choice test to the students and it consisted of 40 items. While in assessing students’ speaking proficiency, the researcher gave the students story telling task.
The result of this study showed there is a positive and significant correlation between grammar mastery and speaking proficiency of the eleventh grade students at SMAN 1 Malang. It can be seen from the computation result of the significance value that is 0,630 which it is higher than 0.05 (5%). It is also indicates that the correlation between students’ grammar mastery and their speaking proficiency is high. Based on the fact above, it showed that the null hypothesis is rejected.
