Improving Students Vocalbulary Masteru Through Repeated And Exetensive Reading Activiy
As higher education institutions are increasingly adopting the principles and strategies of repeated and extensive reading in the fields of learning and teaching, there are major changes. It is said that repeated and extensive reading is one way to make it easier for students to improve vocabulary mastery with several advantages including students can increase new vocabulary mastery through repeated and extensive reading, students can understand new vocabulary. This condition then raises the question of how repeated and extensive reading activities can improve the vocabulary mastery of the students of SMP N 1 Wagir. This study aims to determine the increase in repetitive and extensive reading activities in all students at SMP N 1 Wagir..
The study employed Classroom Action Research. The participants involved in this study were the students at SMP N 1 Wagir. The researcher took 20 students of each intake. Two instruments were used in this study which
included: vocabulary test and posttest. The data gathered were then verified by an expert validator.
Based on the cycle one, it was conclude that implementation repeated and extensive reading activity in this cycle was not successfully achievement the criteria of success. The first was from vocabulary test with total calculation that was 60 %. The scores of students vocabulary test in this cycle showed that students who got the less from criteria of success, 75%. But there are 8 students who got less than 75% and 12 students got more than 75%. This means that the results of the study were unsuccessful. From the results of the cycle above, it shows that the average score of students is taken from the test. From the average score of students in cycle I, the researcher noted that there were 12 students out of 20 students who scored more than 75. This means that 60% of students unssucceded in mastering vocabulary by reading repeatedly. So, the researchers do the cycle II to seen students ability to improve their vocabulary mastery used the interesting short story because the results of the vocabulary test is not success. But in cycle II it was a very good average student achievement. The increase was 20 students and the percentage increased by 95%. Therefore, the researcher assumes that cycle II will be stopped because the success criteria are achieved successfully and satisfactorily. So, researcher can get conclusions from this study related to vocabulary mastery.
In conclusion, this study has proved that repeated and extensive reading activity was effective to increase the students vocabulary mastery. In other words, it can be conclude that repeated and extensive reading activity was effective for teaching vocabulary at seventh grade students level of SMP N 1 Wagir. The findings suggest that the implementation of repeated and extensive reading activity at SMP N 1 Wagir can be continued and developed.
