The Implementation Of Gish Strategy In Teaching English To Comprehend Recount Text
To teach students in reading comprehension, teachers must choose the right way to achieve their goals in students' reading achievement by understanding the content of the text well. The main purpose of reading is to find the main idea of what students have read, to create their critical thinking in reading, also to write a summary their summary of the reading text. Therefore, by using the right strategies during the teaching and learning process, it is believed that it will help students to improve their reading comprehension, then, the GIST strategy is a suitable learning strategy for students in understanding reading texts. Cunnigham said (in Kurniawati & Rosida, 2017) Cunnigham (1982, as cited in Kurniawati & Rosida, 2017) said that GIST (the Generating Interaction Between Schemata and Text) strategy is a method that has advantages in guiding students to write summaries by reviewing each paragraph.
This study is a qualitative study that aims to describe the implementation of GIST how use the implementation of GIST strategy to comprehend recount texts, and how students respond to the implementation of the GIST strategy in eight grade at SMP Pancasila Mukun. The subjects The subjects are English teacher and 10 students of class 2C at SMP Pancasila Mukun. Data collection through observation, interviews, and questionnaires. The analysis consists of three steps, namely: data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing/verification. The results of this data analysis were used to find out how the teacher applied the GIST Strategy and how the students responded to the GIST strategy, after 2 meetings. This study found that the use of the GIST strategy was effective in understanding recount text, it could be seen from how the teacher applied it, all the steps in implementing the GIST strategy were implemented, and the student's responses were very good.
The researcher concluded that the use of the GIST strategy in understanding recount texts was effective when all the steps in its application were implemented and the student's response to the application of the GIST
strategy was very good because this strategy helped students to be independent or not dependent on the teacher in understanding a text
