Speaking is one of four basic language skills in learning English that is seen to be important. Nowdays, achieving oral proficiency is clearly one of the main interests of many English language learners. However, for the students there are a lot of factors that cause difficulties and problems in managing speaking skill. Such as the lack of sufficient exposure to the target language and contact with native speakers and lack of confidence. For that, extracurricular activity English Club is seen to provide an innovative approach to provides additional time and activities in learning speaking. The research aims is intended to explore the students’ perception toward the implementation of English speaking club in University of PGRI Kanjuruhan Malang.
Descriptive qualitative research design was used in this study. The subject was from the students 2017, 2018 and 2019. The students are chosen based on their experience in joining speaking club who have already join this speaking club for at least one semester. The data are taken through questionnaire and interview. The researcher also took 15 of the 21 participants randomly to be interviewed.
Based on the analysis, the implementation of English speaking club gave the students a lot of advantages such as: encouraging the students’ speaking performance, helping the students to have more confidence in speaking, and assisting the students in learning speaking. Although few students found some difficulties in speaking club, the difficulties faced by the students were in terms of their English proficiency, the time management, time allocation, and the unequal ability between the students.
It means that English Club is one of extracurricular the most effective to improve English speaking. Although, few students found some difficulties in speaking club. The majority of the students in this study had a positive perception toward the implementation of speaking club. It could be seen on their response in the questionnaire and interview.
