An Analysis Of Using Code- Maxing On The ''Pretty Little Liars'' Movie
Code-Mixing is the mixing of two or more languages or multiple languages in speech. Code-mixing occurs in everyday conversation in two language or multilingual societies as a result of the speaker's activity or intention to do so. Code-Mixing is not only used in our daily but also films, magazines, and also novels. Many of them are from Indonesian and English. The phenomenon of code-mixing has become interesting to be discussed in the “Pretty Little Liars” Movie. Thus, the researcher would like to analyze Code-Mixing on “Pretty Little Liars” Movie in this research. There are two research questions of this research, they are: (1) What are the types of code-mixing used by the main characters in the “Pretty Little Liars” movie? (2) What is the purpose of code-mixing used by the main characters in the “Pretty Little Liars” movie? The researcher used the descriptive qualitative method to answer the question because of the data of code-mixing in the form of words and sentences rather than in numbers. The subject of this research is the main character in the "Pretty Little Liars" movie. The researcher only focuses on analyzing the types and purpose of code-mixing used by the main character. In this research, the theory of Muysken is used for finding the types of code-mixing and the theory of Holmes and Nabanan is used for finding the purpose of using code-mixing on the "Pretty Little Liars" Movie.Through the data analysis, the researcher discovered 97 data from types of code-mixing. The most dominant type was alternation which occurred 65 times. The main character used this type the most because this type of code-mixing is often found in words, phrases, or clauses that are in the same sentence. The second was insertion which happened 32 times and the last was congruent lexicalization but this type is not found in conversations by the main characters in episodes 1-3 in the "Pretty Little Liars" movie. The purpose of what main characters mix in the language is because it is lexical need, telling something, convincing the topic of conversation, expressing self-emotion, expressing solidarity and intimacy, explaining something and making jokes. The researcher suggests to students to expand sociolinguistic information about the use of code-mixing to make knowledge of English increase. It is also expected that future researchers can advance this research by including all related aspects of code-switching in different dimensions.
