An Analysis Of Students' Writing Anxiety At Universitas PGRI Kanjuruhan Malang
Writing is not an easy process so it can be a problem for students. The students are required to pay attention to all these aspects: content, organization, vocabulary, grammar, and mechanics so there are no mistakes in writing. The difficulties faced by students trigger the emergence of fear, and doubt, which is commonly known as anxiety. Thus, in this study the researcher would like to analyze Students’ Writing Anxiety at Universitas PGRI Kanjuruhan Malang. The purposes of this study were: (1) to find out the causes of students’ anxiety in writing English at Universitas PGRI Kanjuruhan Malang, (2) to investigate the strategies that students use to reduce their anxiety in writing English.In conducting the research, the researcher used the descriptive qualitative method. The subjects of this study were 50 students of the English Education Department, Universitas PGRI Kanjuruhan Malang from 2018 until 2020 intake.The research instruments are questionnaires and interviews. In analyzing the data, the researcher carried out data reduction, data display, conclusion, and verification. The data validity used is the triangulation technique.Through the data analysis, the researcher found out the causes of students’ writing anxiety. It can be proven by finding the following results: (1) The students were worried when they knew they will be graded on writing and they also worried about what others may think about their writing. (2) They also were worried about being asked to write a composition and afraid to ask their teacher for help in writing. (3) They were afraid of getting negative responses or evaluations from other people such as friends or lecturers. Then, the strategies that students used to reduce their anxiety were preparation, relaxation, positive thinking, and peer seeking. The results of this strategies are: (1) the students do more preparation before taking English writing classes. For instance, the students are learning the basic tenses, grammar, and vocabulary. (2) The students do relaxation in which students have to relax so that they can accept and understand the material presented by the teacher. (3) Positive thinking helps the students to be calm such as trying to be confident, and imagining them giving a great performance. (4) Peer seeking is a good way to reduce students’ anxiety, the students can find a suitable learning partner to talk or build a small-scale support group with others who experience the same or difference things.It can be concluded that there are all the causes and strategies used based of theory's Young (1991) and Kondo and Ling (2006). This study is expected to be beneficial for students to open their acknowledgment about writing anxiety, especially in sentence writing as well as strategies to reduce it. The researcher hopes this research can provide the benefits for other researchers and as a reference or inspiration to conduct further research related to this field.
