An Analysis Of 80*S Slang Words On Translations Strategies In Netflix Series Stranger Things

This research deals with 80’s slang words translation and its translation acceptability from the Netflix series Stranger Things. The objectives of the study are: to find out the strategies used by the translator in subtitling 80’s slang in Stranger Things series, and determine the acceptability of translation from Stranger Things series by the viewers.This research applied a qualitative-descriptive method since it is concerned with the analysis of the translation strategy that the translator used in translating 80’s slang word from the Netflix series Stranger Things. The instrument of this research is the researcher herself and questionnaire, also the equipment including laptops and mobile phones. Reading and coding the 80’s slang word found in theStranger Things season 1, 2, and 3 is the way of the researcher in collecting the data. Then, the data were analysed by classifying the translation strategies based on Baker's (2018) theory. After that, the researcher calculates the data to put the result in tables and give an explanation. The researcher also determined the translation acceptability of 80’s slang word translation based on the scale parameter. To validate the data, the researcher use validator who helped in checking the data analysis.The findings showed that the translation of 80’s slang words from Stranger Things series are 20 total data. The general word is the most frequent of translation strategies with 13 data (65%). Followed by neutral/less expressive word in the second position with 3 data (15%). Then, paraphrase using unrelated word with 2 data (10%). The last translation strategy are cultural substitution and paraphrase byusing related words with 1 of each data (5%). Besides, in terms of translation acceptability, 9 data are acceptable (45%), 7 data are less acceptable (35%), and 4 data are highly acceptable (20%). In addition, the difficulties of the translator in translating 80’s slang words are cultural word, dissimilar syntax, and semantic factor.
