Improving Students' Vocabulary Mastery Using Realia (A Classroom Action Research At Islamiv=c Elementary School Alfarby Turen-Malang)
The aim of this study is to know whether the use of realia as teaching media can improve the fourth students’ vocabulary mastery or not. In this research, the researcher focused on the students’ vocabulary mastery in the descriptive text. This study was held in the B fourth grade of SDI ALFARABY Turen-Malang academic year 2016-2017.
The method of this study was a Classroom Action Research (CAR). This research was designed to solve practical problems in the process of English teaching and learning. The subject of the research was the fourth Islamic elementary school students, and the setting of the research was SDI ALFARABY Turen– Malang. There were 16 students in this class, all of them were female. In this research, the researcher used realia as teaching media to improve the students’ vocabulary mastery. This research was conducted in two cycles. Each cycle consisted of three meetings. Each meeting consisted of four steps namely planning, implementing, observing and reflecting. The
researcher used two kinds of techniques to get the data. They are quantitative data and qualitative data. Quantitative data were used to analyze the scores from the teacher(preliminary study) as pretest score and post-test score. The qualitative data were used to analyze the observation checklists, questionnaire, and interview. The quantitative results showed that more than 81,25% of the students achieved the criteria of success. The qualitative analysis also showed that the majority of the students were involved and felt easy to learn vocabulary after realia was used as the teaching media.
Based on the findings above, English teacher, especially in SDI ALFARABY Turen– Malang and English Teacher in other teaching context were suggested to use realia as teaching media because as it was found in this research, it was effective in improving students’ vocabulary mastery
