The Analysis Of Politeness Strategy Found In " Second Chance Summer'' Novel

The study on politeness strategies is an interesting subject for the way to express purposes politely. This study was conducted to examine the types of politeness strategies and the way they are used second chance summer novel in their utterance. This research includes Pragmatics field to the which is the part of Linguistics discipline.
This research employed qualitative descriptive method. The data of this research is the conversations that are uttered by main characters. The data were taken by reading the novel, select and mark the data, and splits the data from the utterances. In analysing the data, Brown and Levinson’s theory (1987) of politeness strategies was employed in analyzing the data.
From the analysis, it was found that all types of politeness strategies were realized in their interaction. 32 times of occurance was found in their utterance, divided into: bald-on record by warning (3),offers (3), requesting (1), positive politeness by claiming common ground (8), Find for the agreement (1), Giving (or Asking for) Reason (1); negative politeness by question (9), apoligize (2); and off-record by Use metaphors (2) and Being Vague/Ambiguos (2). Among all strategies, negative politeness was the most frequent strategy used by main character in the Second Chance Summer novel. The frequency of each type of politeness strategies were: negative politeness was in the first grade with 34.8%, followed by positive politeness with 31.25%. followed by bald on record 21.9%. and the last off record strategy 12.5%.
This research is expected to be a reference to deliver politeness strategy in daily communication especially for the student of English Literature Department to choose the appropriate strategies based on the context. This research also suggests for the further researchers who are interested in the same topic to choose another politeness strategy and apply different subject such as movie, real life conversation and so on, in order to enhance the comprehension of applying apology strategy in real life.
