Negative Stereotyping Reflected In Novel Ayat-Ayat Cinta 2 By Habiburrahman El Shirazy 2015
attributes or the characteristics that exist in a certain group. Stereotypes assumes that people will have the same characteristics and behaviour as members of their social group. It is curiously since every individual or group has their point of view about others. People tend to have variety of view about the other group or individual, so that it becomes an interesting issue to identify the negative stereotype reflected in novel Ayat-Ayat Cinta 2.
A descriptive qualitative design was used in this research. The subjects of this research were the main characters of novel Ayat-Ayat Cinta 2. The object of this research was negative stereotypes reflected in novel Ayat-Ayat Cinta 2.
Negative stereotypes identified in this research were based on 7 categories as proposed by Schneider (2005) which include: gender, race, age, language, national group, occupation and socioeconomic, and physical appearance. In analysing the data, the researcher used data analysis framework suggested by Miles and Huberman (1994) which include: data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing/verification.
This research found six of the seven types of negative stereotypes as proposed by Schneider (2005) reflected in novel Ayat-Ayat Cinta 2 which include: gender, race, age, national group, occupation and socioeconomic, and physical appearance. The most dominant type of negative stereotype identified in novel Ayat-Ayat Cinta 2 is race stereotype. Meanwhile, age and physical appearance are types of negative stereotype which are rarely used by the main characters in the novel. The characters mostly behave in response to negative stereotypes by reject by argument. The characters rarely response to negative stereotypes by acceptance because they tend to reject the stereotypes in order to protect themselves and their group.
The findings showed that stereotyping is a common phenomenon that often occurs in society. People tend to give negative stereotypes to individuals or groups they do not like. In addition, people are also easier to give stereotypes because they are influenced by their environment. The possible reasons for race stereotype become the most dominant stereotype reflected in the novel is that; first, the novel’s genre is romance; second, the novel focuses on Fahri and his multicultural environment. Therefore, the use of race as a basis of negative stereotypes can be found frequently.
