An Analysis Of Derivational Affixes On Short Story Entitled "The Monkey's Paw" By William Whymark Jacob
This study mainly discuss the morphology roles in the short story entitled
The Monkey's Paw by William Whymark Jacob. The goal of this study are: (1).
To find out the process of derivational affixes that found in the short story entitled
"The Monkey's Paw" by William Whymark Jacob. (2) To find out its function of
derivational affixation that used in the short story entitled "The Monkey's Paw" by
William Whymark Jacob.
This study used descriptive qualitative method because it is appropriate with
the objectives of this study which aim to give deep explanation about the the
process and the its function of the derivation affixes which is found in the short
story entitled "The Monkey's Paw". The technique of collecting the data are by
downloading the text of the short story entitled “The Monkey’s Paw”on the
internet, reading the story and then searched the words that contain derivational
affixes, transcribing the data, and identifying the process and the function of both
suffix and prefix. At last, drawing the conclusion is also required.
The result of this study shows that derivational affixes are found in the short
story entitled “The Monkey’s Paw”. There are three types of derivational
affixation namely derivational suffixes, derivational prefixes, and multiple
affixation. Types of suffix which are found are -ly, -r, -ing, -ous, -y, -al, -or, -ty,
-th, -er, -ine, -ive, -cy , -ness, -ment, -ion, -ible, -ful, -ble, -ance, -ery, -ity, -ation,
-en, -less, -ish, -ant, -ace, -ily, -fast, and -ter. For the prefix are un-, ware-, in-,
any-, an-, con-, en-, anti-, up-, re-, non-, co-, dis-, pre-, ex-, a-, under-, down-, ad-,
and hen-. While for the multiple affixation, the researcher find the combination of
prefix and suffix and the double suffixes. For the combination affix are /re-/ & /-
ed/, /un-/ & /-able/, /hen-/ & /-ed/, /un-/ & /-al/, /un-/ & /-ed/, /pre-/ & /-ed/, /un-/
& /-ily/, /un-/, /-en/, & /-ing/, /un-/ & /-d/, /in-/ & /-d/, /re-/ & /-d/. While for the
double suffix are /-ing/, /-ed/, /-less/, /-al/, /-ful/, /-ible/, /-ish/, /-duce/, /-y/, and
/-er/ which collaborate with the derivational suffix /-ly/, /-ness/, /-ity/, /-ing/ and
/-ily/.
The functions of derivational affixes consist of noun formation, adjective
formation, verb formation, adverb formation, changed the meaning and also can
change both part of speech and meaning in a single base.
