An Analysis Of Ilocotionary Acts In Bangtan Sonyeondan (BTS) Leader Namjoon' s Speech
This study aimed at investigating the social phenomena of speech acts focuses on illoutionary acts through Kim Namjoon's speech entitled “Speak Yourself” at the 73rd Session of United Nation General Assembly in 2018, which is a high-level event attended by ministers, vice presidents and presidents from various countries. In the pragmatics field, it is still rare for researchers to examine the speech of a Korean artist in a formal context, such as Kim Namjoon's speech. The study employed a descriptive qualitative design. According to Moleong cited in (Rosyidi et al., 2019), descriptive qualitative research aims to understand the research subject and describe it in the form of words. Since this study is qualitative, the writer became the main instrument. In collecting the data, the writer did several steps such as reading, identifying, coding, and classification. In analyzing the data, the writer used Searle’s theory of illocutionary acts. The writer did data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing and verification. Then the data gathered were verified by an expert validator. The writer found 31 data of illocutionary acts performed by Kim Namjoon in his speech namely representative, directive, expressive, and commissive. The dominant type was representative acts with 12data (39%), followed by directive acts 8 data (26%), expressive acts 8 data (26%), and commissive acts 3 data (9%). There was no declarative act found in this study. It might happen because thecontext of his speech is inappropriate to perform declarative acts. Also, Kim Namjoon did not have any authority to declare things in his speech.Kim Namjoon’s speech is about self-love, it might be the reason of him to perform representative a lot because he tells the eaudiences or hearers about his childhood and when he debuted as BTS member. He talks a lot about his experiences dealing with people’s judgement towards him and his group BTS
