The Effectiveness Of Storytelling Technique Though Picture Series On Students' Speacking Skill
Speaking skill is frequently viewed as a critical skill for second language learners
because speaking skill is always associated with the success or failure of someone
mastering English However, mastering speaking skill is not easy. Teachers are required
to use an appropriate technique to teach the students speaking. Implementing storytelling
through picture is seen to be effective. This technique does not only foster creative
thinking but also helps students express ideas sequently. This study aimed to investigate
whether the use of storytelling technique through picture series provided a positive
significant effect on the students’ speaking skill.
The quasi experimental research design was used in this study. This research was
conducted at SMP Negeri 1 Poncokusumo in the academic year of 2021/2022. There were
two kinds of classes; experimental class and control class which consist of 27 students
for each class, so the sample of this study was 54 students. Each class was given treatment
for four times. The experimental class was taught by storytelling technique through
picture series, while the control class was taught by using conventional technique. The
data of this study were taken through test in form of pre-test and post-test. The calculation
of the data was done using SPSS 20 Version.
Based on the data analysis, the research finding showed that there was a
significant difference between experimental class’s speaking score and control class’s
speaking score. The mean score of speaking test done by the experimental class, based
on the result of Independent sample t-test of post-test, was 70.22. Meanwhile, speaking
test done by the control class, based on the result of Independent sample t-test of posttest, was 60.15. It meant that the implementation of storytelling technique through picture
series gave significant positive effect on students’ speaking skill.
The findings of this study suggested that storytelling technique through picture
series can be an effective technique in teaching speaking. It was proved by the findings
that storytelling technique through picture series gave significant positive effect on
students’ speaking skill. Therefore, storytelling technique through picture series can be
used by English teacher to teach speaking
